Celebrating 20 years of youth impact

Did you know that halogens are a group of chemical elements that react to fuel light and heat resources? Neither did many of our client’s target audiences.

Previously known as Halogen Foundation, this youth organisation was founded in 2003 by two passionate young adults who saw youth as halogens—powerful catalysts for change in their communities. While it started as a programme vendor for schools, Halogen had grown to an end-to-end youth impact hub over two decades that included mentoring, incubation, and impact measurement business pillars. As their 20th anniversary approached, it was time for a refresh that would encapsulate the breadth and depth of their work.

Out with the old, in with the bold

After taking a deep dive into the client’s pain points, we made the decision to drop the “foundation” descriptor as the organisation was occasionally mistaken as a trust. We preserved the signature yellow and black colours as well as the original lightbulb logomark—now situated within the wordmark instead of outside it—to honour the brand's legacy. Utilising negative space to illustrate the intangible impact of youth work, the “o” now represents Halogen’s new positioning as an epicentre of change.

A new look for the next generation of youth leaders

While Halogen had experienced exponential growth over the years, the many programmes and services had no brand architecture system to anchor themselves in. After the strategic exercise, we decided to organise all offerings into four business units and tie it to new secondary colours. Together with the signature Halogen Yellow, the new colour palette could be rendered into a lively spectrum to represent the dynamic nature of youth work.

The bold yet versatile Poppins was also chosen to express the brand’s youthful personality while ensuring readability across all text sizes.

Creating the overlapping circles of influence

After 20 years of existence, Halogen now had a central graphic communicator to tie all its communication points together. Derived from the logo identity, we created the overlapping circles of influence that illustrates youths’ impact on their communities. The graphic communicator was created with digital applications in mind, where the circles could pulsate and ripple across screens for a more kinetic feel.

The new Halogen brand was launched at its 20th anniversary celebration in August 2023, with President Tharman Shanmugaratnam as the guest of honour. A launch page was specially designed for the occasion, with the full website being unveiled in 2024. The design language has since been adopted across diverse brand facets by the client team, helping them to realise a world made better by future-reading young people in the next 20 years of youth impact.
